In electronics, a multiplexer (or mux) is a device that combines several analog or digitalinput signals and forwards them into a single output line. A multiplexer of {\displaystyle 2^{n}} inputs has {\displaystyle n} select lines, which are used to select which input line to send to the output

Hope it helps you..

Sending many signals separately is expensive and requires more wires to send. So there is a need of multiplexing.
