The presence or absence of pigments is the main basis of classification of algae:-

1. Chlorophyceae - In this type of algae Chlorophyll a and b are present and impart green colour pigment. These are also called as ‘blue-green algae’.

2. Phaeophyceae - This type of algae Chlorophyll a and c along with fucoxanthin are present. Fucoxanthin imparts brown colour to the algae . And are also known as ‘brown algae’.

3. Rhodophyceae - These algae has chlorophyll a and d and phycoerythrin are present. It imparts red colour. And are also called ‘red algae’.
