There are five basic components of correct singing. Those are pitch, breathing, rhythm, diction and voice. Any of these components can be subdivided and there are a lot of things that should be taken into a consideration if you want to become a good singer, but let's start with the very basics.1. Pitch
-You need to be able to stay in a specific key depending on the music, and not be tone deaf. If you are tone deaf, singing can be a very difficult (if not impossible) task.
2. Breath
-Diaphragmatic breathing is key here. If you aren't 'breathing from your belly', you're doing it wrong, and you won't have proper breath support, this means you are going to be at many disadvantages, some of them being lack of sustain and a limited vocal range. You don't want to be singing too breathy either and have proper 'vocal chord closure'. Unhealthy ways of singing lead to nodules.
3. Placement and Resonance
-Simply means, you need to 'aim' the sound from your throat into the correct position within your mouth. Not way back up there in the throat, and not too frontal and nasally. Resonate perfectly by finding a balance between your nasal passages and your throat/mouth.
