The basis of political divisions of India is the governing entities.

EXPLANATION:

India fought for its independence for a long time and finally achieved it in the year 1947 from the hands of the britishers. India is a vast country and its separated by its 'states' and 'union territories', India has '29 states' and '7 union' territories with telengana being its 29th state. In the state recognition act of 1956 all the states got its recognition which is built on the Westminster model. It has remained like that since then.
