The basis of modern periodic table is atomic number

Lithium with atomicnumber 3 and potassium with atomic number 19 are placed in same group because they are having the same number of valence electron that is 1 .

The first and second element in the the second group will be beryllium and magnesium with atomic number 4 and 12 respectively.

I hope my answer will help you.
