Any visible movement such as walking, breathing, or growing is generally used to decide whether something is alive or not. However, a living organism can also have movements, which are not visible to the naked eye. Therefore, the presence of life processes is a fundamental criterion that can be used to decide whether something is alive or not.

Hello there, the characteristics of a living are found out to be
- Growth
- Metabolism
- Cellular organisation
- Reproduction
- consciousness
of all these only two of them turned out to be defining properties: those properties which have least or no exceptions and they are
- Cellular organisation
- Consciousness
The rest of the properties had alot of exceptions such as growth which is taken as increase in mass but non living objects(let's say sand)can also increase in mass by natural processes.
