Having scored 10 CGPA in class 10th (session 2016–17), I find myself eligible to answer this question.

You need to keep the following things in mind while studying:-

Devote a maximum of 1–2 hours a day to self study. The reason I have mentioned the word “Maximum” is that I’ve seen many students who spend just too much time studying. At 10th class level you don't really need to study that much. Even if you can spend that much time on alternate days, its alright.
Do revision on regular basis. Spend around 10–15 minutes each day for each subject to revise whatever was taught in the school. I used to revise the school work on weekly basis. But it depends upon the individual whether they want to do it daily or weekly. A regular revision is a must to score good marks.
Don’t get discouraged by low marks. Not only in class 10th, but whichever class you may be, Never ever get discouraged by low marks. One test, most probably, is not going to decide how much you are going to score at the end of the session. Even in my case, there were several tests in which I was not able to score well. 13 out of 20 in Hindi Unit Test, 76 out of 90 in Science SA1 (Mid Term Exam), 15.5 out of 20 in two Science Unit Tests just to mention a few.
Trust me, 10th class is not “that” difficult. You must have heard from some of your seniors that 10th class level is completely different from other classes. But in reality, you may face some difficulties initially, but slowly and gradually you will get used to it.
Focus more on conceptual understanding rather than marks. Your 10th class marks won’t matter much. So its better to prepare yourself for senior classes. Focus more on concepts, try to apply them in your real life and you’ll soon observe that things start being easy.
Set priorities. It may seem a bit weird, but spend more time and give more priority on chapter reading, revision and solving problems rather than homework. I did this and it worked for me very well.
So how much time you need to spend everyday? Spend around 1–2 hours for self study and another 1 hour for revision. Refresh yourself by playing a sport everyday. Spending too much of time studying (specifically for “bookworms”) is totally useless. Also, if possible, try to give 15–30 minutes everyday to learn a new skill. It is going to help you in future.
Don’t run behind marks. The truth is, everyone is going to forget your 10th class result within 3–4 days of its declaration. The only thing that is going to be with you throughout your life is what you are learning day by day. So, Improve yourself daily.
Last but not the least. What I’ve learnt over my past academic years, “Agar Padhaai se tension hoti ho to ya tension lena chhod do, ya padhaai chhod do” (If you don’t like studying, or you get tensed about your marks, then either stop getting tensed or leave studies) ;)
If you have any problem regarding your academics, feel free to message me.

Best of Luck…
