The workers of Lenin shipyards in the city of Gdansk went on strike on 14 august 1980. Lech Walesa was an electrician and one of the workers at the the shipyard. He joined the strike and under his leadership, the strike turned into a movement and then into a party named as Solidarity. When the government gave into the pressures of the party to organize elections , the party won by majority votes and Lech Walesa, being the leader of the party, became the President.
