Nitrates from fertilizers get washed into rivers.
It causes the rapid growth of algae.
Algae dies and are decomposed by aerobic bacteria.
Aerobic bacteria use up dissolved oxygen.
Oxygen level in water decrease.
Fishes and aquatic organisms die due to lack of oxygen.
This phenomenon is known as eutrophication.
Eutrophication can also be due to decrease amount of sunlight.
