Cyanosis refers to a bluish cast to the skin and mucous membranes, like inside the mouth or the lips. It's caused by low oxygen levels in the red blood cells. Inperipheral cyanosis, the bluish colour is usually due to slowing of the blood flow to an area with constriction of the blood vessels.People whose blood is low in oxygen tend to have a bluish colour to their skin. This condition is called cyanosis. Depending on the cause, cyanosis may develop suddenly, along with shortness of breath and other symptoms. Cyanosis that is caused by long-term heart or lung problems may develop slowly.
