What is the cause of dispersion of white light through a glass prism? Draw a ray diagram to show the path of light when two identical glass prisms are arranged together in an inverted position with respect to each other and a narrow beam of white light is allowed to fall obliquely on one of the faces of the prisms.

Dispersion and reverse of dispersion of light

Explanation:

When white light passes through a prism, it gets dispersed into the component colors of violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. This is the principle on which rainbows are formed.

Newton showed that reverse of dispersion of light is also possible. He placed two identical glass prisms together in an inverted position with respect to each other and arranged for a narrow beam of white light to fall obliquely on one of the faces of the prisms.

It was observed that the light gets dispersed when it passes through the first prism. The second prism receives all the rainbow colours of light, recombines them into the original white light.
