Blindness is caused by vitamin A deficiency.
- Vitamin A (retinol) is necessary for synthesis of retinol pigments which are required for dark adaptation of the eyes.
- It is necessary for vision in dim light.
- The main sources of these vitamin is leafy vegetables like spinach, cabbage, orange, pumpkin, papaya and other animal sources like fish liver, egg, butter, cheese, etc.
- Apart from blindness , the main deficiency symptoms are are keratomalacia, xerophthalmia, dryness of the skin and dryness of the conjunctiva.
- For prophylaxis , amount of vitamin A to be taken is 4000 IU/day.
