- The central idea behind the poem is an awareness of the pain of loss and the courage it takes to accept it. The boy losses his favourite ball and is very upset. He can easily buy another ball but more than money or the new ball, it is the pain of losing the old one that matters the most

Although he is still suffering yet he is learning to move on from his fleeting childhood. The true theme of the poem is that we should cherish every moment of life. Life is really very short. The poet realises that it is very difficult to deal with the loss but it must be done.
