What is the CGS system of units of power of a lens ?
Answers
A dioptre (British spelling) or diopter (American spelling) is a unit of measurement of the optical power of a lens or curved mirror, which is equal to the reciprocal of the focal length measured in metres. (1 dioptre = 1 m−1.) It is thus a unit of reciprocal length.
Dioptre
Dioptre is the CGS system unit for measuring the optical power of a lens or curved mirror. The British spelling of Dioptre is Dioptre. The American spelling of Dioptre is Diopter. There is a small difference between American English and British English. As we know that, diopter is the just reciprocal of the length. The unit of diopter is reciprocal of the unit of length that is:
[ 1 dioptre = 1 / metre ]
Here, the optical power of lens or curved mirror is inversely proportional to the length. If the optical power of lens or curved mirror is more then the length is less and if the optical power of lens are curved mirror is less then the length is more.
CGS System
This system of units was setup in France. In this the system C stands for centimeter, G stands for gram and S stands for second. It is a metric system of units. This system deals with only three mechanical fundamental quantities are as follows as mass, length and time. These fundamental units corresponding to the fundamental quantities respectively are centimetre, gram and second.
