Mrs Slater is an aggressive woman who does not have any scruples about stealing her father's properties before her sister comes. Henry is a man with principles but too weak to oppose his wife. Mrs Jordan is like her sister Mrs Slater in claiming that she had more rights to her father's property. Both the sisters are hypocrites and greedy. They only have eyes on their father's property but have no interest in his well-being, Ben Jordan is very supportive of his wife even when she is not justified in her attitudes. Abel Merryweather is a clever old man who sees through the pretense of his daughters and decides to give them a suitable punishment.
