The chemical formula of Slaked Lime is Ca(OH)2. Slaked Lime is generally used in whitewashing walls. It is formed by the reaction of Quick Lime with Water. This reaction can be summarised as the equation below :

CaO + H2O --> Ca(OH)2 + Heat

This reaction is a highly exothermic reaction. It produces large amount of heat which can even break an earthen pot. This mixture can also splash out and cause severe burns. It is left for one night to cool down and then applied on the walls.

After a matter of two or three days, a shiny coating appears on the walls which gives them a white finish. This is a thin layer of Calcium Carbonate on the walls which gets accumulated due to the reaction of Calcium Hydroxide with the Carbon Dioxide present in the air. This reaction can be summarised as the equation below:

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 --> CaCO3 + H2O
