The chemical name of cotton is Gossypium.

Gossypium is a floral plant genus in the mallow family's Gossypieae tribe. Most of these are angiosperms. Cotton is the largest "nonfood crop" in the world, producing half of the world's "textiles, explosives", oil, "cattle food", toothpaste.

Cotton is modern humans primary natural fiber. It is a major oil seed crop and a major source of "protein for animal feed" where cotton is grown. Cotton is therefore of great importance to agriculture, industry, and commerce.
