The chief objective of National Forest Policy was to provide stability to environment as well as maintain ecological balance like atmospheric equilibrium which is an integral part for the sustenance of every human, plant and animal.

Indian forest act was established in 1873 soon after the formation of the forest department in 1861.The national forest policy was pronounced clearly in October, 1894.

However even after nearly 9 decades of existence of the forest department and nearly 6 decades of implementation of National forest policy not much has changed on the ground level in terms of conserving the forest wealth.  

As a result a revised National Forest Policy was drafted which along with various steps, stressed mainly on denudation of forests to be restricted which covered the mountainous regions as these regions provided ever lasting water supply to the systems depended in tracts which comprises the fertility of the country.
