Chipko movement was started in 1970's in order to protect and conserve the forests and trees from being destroyed.

Basic elements : It was first started in Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarkhand then in Uttar Pradesh. this movement incorporated ghandian methods of satagraha and non violence resistance through the act of hugging of trees to protect them from being felled .

• Chipko movement was one of the famous movements which conserve the nature and Environment.

• Chipko movement was started in 1970s in Uttarakhand.

• Later it spreaded to different parts of North India.

• Chipko movement was first initiated by Sunderlal Bahuguna.

•The first Chipko action was started in 1973 in Alakananda valley.

• The word "Chipko" means to "embrace". People hugged the trees to save from the deforestation.

• This movement was non-violent movement and a type of Satyagrah.

• The villages hug the trees against the axes of the contacters which prevent deforestation.
