Solution :-

given that,

Class ------------------ Frequency

5 - 10 ----------------------- 5

10 - 15 ---------------------- 3

15 - 20 ----------------------9

20 - 25 --------------------- 2

As we can see that, all given class intervals are overlapping intervals .

we know that, for overlapping intervals ,

  • Class size = Upper limit - Lower limit .

So, taking class interval 5 - 10

→ Upper limit = 10

→ Lower limit = 5

then,

→ Class size = Upper limit - Lower limit

→ Class size = 10 - 5

→ Class size = 5 (Ans.)

Hence, the class size of the given frequency distribution is 5 .

SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

The class size of the frequency distribution

CONCEPT TO BE IMPLEMENTED

Class Size

Class Length or Class Size or Class Width of the class interval of any class is defined to be the difference between the lower and upper class boundaries ( not class limits) of that particular class interval.

Class length = Upper Class boundary - Lower class boundary

Generally to prepare a grouped frequency table , the class size of each class is taken to be the same

EVALUATION

Here the given frequency table is

\begin{gathered} \begin{array}{|c|c|  } \bf{Class \: } & \bf{Frequency} \\ 5 - 10 & 5  \\10 - 15 & 3  \\15 - 20 & 9  \\20 - 25 & 2  \end{array}\end{gathered}

We now prepare the frequency table with class size of each class

\begin{gathered} \begin{array}{|c|c|c|   } \bf{Class \: } & \bf{Frequency} &  \bf{Class  \: Size } \\ 5 - 10 & 5 & 5  \\10 - 15 & 3 & 5    \\15 - 20 & 9 & 5    \\20 - 25 & 2  & 5   \end{array}\end{gathered}

Thus class size of each class = 5
