Only a small amount of rainfall occurs in December and January. The average annual rainfall varies from 30 inches (760 mm) at the western end of the basin to more than 90 inches (2,290 mm) at the eastern end. The delta region experiences strong cyclonic storms both before the commencement of the monsoon season, from March to May, and at the end of it, from September to October. Some of those storms result in much loss of life and the destruction of homes, crops, and livestock. One such storm, which occurred in November 1970, was of catastrophic proportions, resulting in deaths of at least 200,000 and possibly as many as 500,000 people; another, in April 1991, killed some 140,000.
