Answer:
when the banker decides to kill the lawyer in order to prevent him from winning the bet and, thus, to save himself from financial ruin. He, thus, enters the lawyer's room and moves near the sleeping man in order to kill him. The tension peaks when, on the verge of killing him, he finds and reads the lawyer's letter, in which he explains his decision to give up the wager money. This forms the climax of the story, wherein the banker goes from being about to commit murder to being stopped in his tracks. Thereafter, the tension decreases when the banker leaves the room and, then, the lawyer's departure is revealed.
