What Is a Coefficient?

A coefficient refers to a number or quantity placed with a variable. It is usually an integer that is multiplied by the variable next to it. The variables which do not have a number with them are assumed to be having 1 as their coefficient.

The coefficient in 3x sq. Y will be = 3x

Let's look at a different expression, 5x2 - 4x + 8. In this expression 5 is the coefficient of x2, -4 is the coefficient of x and 8 is the constant coefficient. Thus the coefficients in 5 x2 - 4 x + 8 are 5, -4 and 8. We most often simplify polynomial before using them but they need not be simplified.

Hence,

 - 3{x}^{2} y =3x
