The collective name for layers of soil is soil horizon.

Soil Horizon comprises of the physical features, and texture of the different layers of the soil. The different horizons of the soil are organic, surface, subsoil, substratum and bedrock layer. The organic surface layer comprises the upper part of the soil which contains plant residues. Surface soil comprises of organic matter which accumulates in the soil. Subsoil consists of less organic matter and more of iron oxides. The substratum is the layer of the soil which is poorly weathered. Bedrock is the base of the soil profile.
