The colours we see are the wavelengths that are reflected or transmitted. For example, a red shirt looks red because the dye molecules in the fabric have absorbed the wavelengths of light from the violet/blue end of the spectrum. Redlight is the only light that is reflected from the shirt

The light from the sun is white. White light is not just one colour, but many colours mixed together. You can see these colours when raindrops bend the light and split it into the colours of a rainbow.

Different coloured objects absorbs and reflect different amounts of each colour from the sun's light. An object will appear whatever colour it reflects. All the other colours are absorbed. For example, letterbox looks red because it reflects red light and absorbs the other colours. Some things are not coloured they are black or white. Black absorbs all the light, and white reflects all the light.
