What is the colour of water?

Explanation:

Water is a compound of hydrogen & oxygen and both of them have no color properties or show any colors so Water itself is colorless!

However the color that we see with our naked eyes that appears as blue in water is not actually the color of water but is actually a phenomena of refraction, reflection and especially dispersion of Light rays.

Let me explain the Dispersion of light…

See in physics we have a property of light called as dispersion of light waves into its original colors which happens mostly through a prism when pure light i.e normal colorless light is passed through a prism it splits into 7 different colors.

So actually when light rays from sun or any other source hits the water surface some part of the rays disperses into the water (due to the high density of water it acts as a prism) and eventually the color of water appears to be blue…because the concentration of blue light among these 7 is higher in this case but, this happens only if water is in an equivalently higher concentration because of which the water in a glass doesn’t appear to be blue but the water in a swimming pool appear bluish.

And that’s how it works.
