What are adjectives ?

Adjectives are the words that describe a noun , a pronoun , an adverb or another adjective in a better and descriptive way.

Eg :

  • Her dress is beautiful.
  • Sony is sad.
  • The hare ran fast.

Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives :-

\large{\sf\pink{ Positive \: Degree :- }}

Here no comparison is made with anyone or anything. It is just a matter of a descriptive word ; describing it's respective noun or pronoun in the sentence.

Eg :

  • Grace is happy
  • Hermia is good in Math

Here no where we get the sense of the subjects ( in both the cases ) being compared to anyone or anything.

So , we can conclude that in positive degree of adjectives no comparison is held.

\large{\sf\blue{ Comparative\: Degree :- }}

Here two things are compared. In this type the adjective ends with (-er). Additionally the word than comes after the adjective which shows comparison.

Eg :

  • Jaya is happier than Grace.

Here Jaya's happiness is being compared with the happiness of Grace .

  • In Math Lisa is better than Hermia.

Note : Words such as good , bad , little , much , etc do not take any (-er) but do change their forms. Like :

Good - Better - Best

Bad - Worse - Worst

Little - Less - Least

Much - More - Most

\large{\sf\green{ Superlative\: Degree :- }}

Here the comparison is held up between more than two nouns. In this form of comparison the adjective ends with (-est) . The article the precedes the adjective.

Eg :

  • Rahul is the happiest.

Here Rahul is being compared with everyone who is happy.

It is shown that his happiness is the highest among everyone

  • Sam is the best in Math.

Note : Some words take more and most instead of (-er) or (-est)

More examples of degrees of Comparison of adjectives:

  • Tall - Taller - Tallest
  • Big - Bigger - Biggest
  • Important - More Important - Most Important
