Answer:

Your choice of axis totally depends on you .

YES , I MEAN YOU AND ONLY YOU …

Nobody said that the east is always along the x - axis and the north is always along the y - axis .

It is absolutely safe and technically correct if you choose the EAST as the y - axis and NORTH is fixed along the x-axis ( +ve or -ve ) direction accordingly . It is usually in practice to assume the EAST along the x - axis and the NORTH along the y - axis , and people take it for granted , here lies the misconception .

Anyways , since the choice of axis totally depends upon you , if you choose the EAST as the y - axis , the component of force acting in that direction is the whole force itself , since in this case the angle is zero radians ( or degrees ) hence cos ( 0 ) = 1 .

That means , ( 5 * cos 0 ) N = ( 5 * 1 ) N = 5 N is the component along the east .

Now , if you choose the EAST along the x - axis , as usually considered ,then the NORTH will be along the +ve y - axis , which is at an angle ( π / 2 ) radians with the EAST ( x - axis ) .

Hence component of force along y = 5 * cos ( π/2 ) N = ( 5 * 0 ) N = 0 .

Hence , there is no component / zero component of force in this direction , which means , that the motion of any object along the NORTH ( y - direction ) is not under the influence of the force ( 5N ) acting along the x - axis .

Thank you !!!

The component along y-axis is Zero.

Given:

Force of 5N exerted towards east.

To Find:

the component along y-axis

Solution:

East is along X - axis.

Therefore, the angle between the X axis and Y- axis is 90 degree.

We know that the components along

I) X-axis = Asinθ

ii) y- axis = Acosθ

A = 5N and θ = 90°

the component along y-axis  = Acosθ

= 5× cos90°

= 5 × 0

= 0

Therefore, the component along y-axis is Zero.
