Explanation:

The purpose of this lab was to dissect a complete flower and identify the parts of the flower used in sexual reproduction. The flower we used for this lab was the Tiger Lily and is a complete flower that means it has both male and female parts and can self-pollinate and self-fertilize . We observed the pistil that is the female part that holds the ovum (female gamete) in a structure called the ovules. We also observed the stamen that contains anthers that produce pollen (male gamete). These gametes are formed by Meiosis. Under the microscope we were able to see individual pollen grains that hold the sperm nucleus. Plants use sexual reproduction when pollination occurs, the sperm nucleus travels to the ovary, fertilizes the egg cell and produces a seed. Plants use both the pistil and stamen for sexual reproduction. Plants may also reproduce asexually by using pieces cut from the roots, stems or leaves. Plants that reproduce asexually would be genetically identical to the parent because cells are form by Mitosis during asexual reproduction.
