Women can discriminated in every sphere of life in Saudi Arabia. They need permission to travel(if below 45), conduct business, go for elective surgery, and until 2008 employment. Almost all restaurants in Saudi Arabia(exceptions are luxury restaurants in hotels where citizens don't eat) are segregated into family zones where each table is shielded by a curtain or divider and men-only zones. Women are not allowed to eat alone in general. Though some may allow them to go in family zones especially in Jeddah.
In some places, there are only men zones so women have to stand outside to get their order.
Sometimes it gets extreme, inspectors may yank the TV wires if they air a song with a female voice or a music video where a women is singing in a tub full of milk (possibly pornography according to inspectors). Waiters cannot smile in extreme cases as it is considered "sexual". There are very few women-only restaurants with female waiters. In other cases, waiters must be male.
Local women are underrepresented in the workforce (only 6% if foreign women are included 18%). Most women have jobs like teaching, medicine, and jobs which only involve women interaction. Engineering, law, architecture, etc were not acceptable until recently. Though it is getting better. The first co-ed university opened. This was controversial as women did not have to veil and could drive in campus. Another controversial subject is if all-women or all-men staff should work in undergarment shops for women. Women have complained that they have felt uncomfortable with the all-men staff. I think that within one year all-men staff should be replaced with women in undergarment, abaya, wedding dresses and cosmetic shops. This will increase women in labour participation.
Women cannot drive in Saudi Arabia. Before the Iranian Revolution in 1979, adult women have reported driving. Even now in rural areas it is possible. The ban on women's driving has reasons including the common below:
Driving a car involves uncovering the face.Driving a car may lead women to go out of the house more often.Driving a car may lead women to have interaction with non-mahram males, for example at traffic accidents.Women driving cars may lead to overcrowding the streets and many young men may be deprived of the opportunity to drive.Driving would be the first step in an erosion of traditional values, such as gender segregationUncomm saying that driving can lead to the damage of a women's ovaries.
Recently women were allowed to ride biycles and bide in recreational areas including parks provided that they are fully covered and have a male relative with them.
Muslim women are discriminated in courts as they are equal to ½ a muslim man's words. If a Christian &(I think)Jewish women it is equal to ¼ a Muslims mans words. And words of women of other religions like Hinduism are equal to ⅛ a Muslim mans to prove rape, lets say there needs to be 4 witnesses. You need 4 muslim men or 8 Muslim women or 12 Christian women or 24 Hindu women as witnesses or a combination of all three.
Women cannot take part in sports. In school no pt class exists leading to many women being overweight. Recently in private schools, pt for girls was allowed.
