The conflict depicted in the poem is between the emotional and the rational self, feelings and education, heart and the mind. The poet admired the guest who had arrived at his trough on a hot summer day and while his heart told him that the snake was harmless and should be respected, the voice of education compelled him to throw a log at the snake and kill it.
