Plasma membrane is the outermost covering of all the cells and it separates the cell content from the external environment. It is formed of lipids and proteins. It is semi permeable in nature. It functions as a mechanical barrier, protects the cell contents and maintains internal environment of the cell. Mainly it gives definite shape to cell.
