The Meter Bridge is an instrument to find out an unknown resistance by using the concept of balanced Wheatstone Bridge

The basic components of a Metre Bridge as follows :

  • Unknown Resistance

  • Shunt Resistance /Known Resistance

  • Galvanometer

  • 1 metre = 100 cm long wire

All these components are attached to each other just like a Wheatstone Bridge. The Galvanometer is connected to the the one metre long wire in such a way that the wheatstone bridge becomes balance and there is no deflection in the galvanometer.

In that Case , we can say that :

  \boxed{ \red{ \bold{\dfrac{R}{S}  =  \dfrac{L}{100 - L} }}}

Construction:

Basically, we have 4 resistances

  • R , S , L and (100-L)

Now , R and S are connected in series with one another using copper strips. And in parallel to them is connected the 100 cm long wire.

Now a connection is set up inbetween them using Galvanometer such that it can slide along the wire .

The wire containing Galvanometer is slided along the 100 cm long wire such that no deflections are observed in the galvanometer.

That is the balanced position
