Bishnu Chakraborty was Rabindranath’s first music teacher and he taught him to sing a Bengali nursery rhyme set to the tune of a ragini. When Tagore began composing his songs, he wrote using the simplicity of the Bengali language, and gave the music himself to most of them. It is very important to sing these perfectly, and most Bengalis today are able to sing the more popular ones as part of their proud inheritance.
