Hey!

___________

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was a Russian chemist.
Mendeleev arranged the elements in increasing order of their masses in horizontal rows till he got an element having properties similar to the first element.
He then placed thus element below the first element which started the second row of elements.
Proceeding in similar manner, he arranged all the known elements of "that" time in form of periodic table.

Mendeleev's periodic law states that when elements are arranged in order of their increasing masses, certain set of properties recur periodically.

Mendeleev's periodic table consisted of 8 vertical columns called groups and six horizontal rows called periods.

First 7 groups had two subgroups each.
Subgroup A and Subgroup B
Subgroup A consisted of representative elements.
Subgroup B consisted of transition elements.

Elements in with group were arranged in series of three in forth, fifth and sixth periods.

MERITS OF MENDLEEV'S PERIODIC TABLE -:

• Mendeleev's was the first classification that successfully included all the elements.

• When Nobel gases were discovered, they could be placed in the table without disturbing the order.

LIMITATIONS OF MENDLEEV'S PERIODIC TABLE -:

• He was not able to give a position to hydrogen. Because it had properties of metal but it was gas, so Mendeleev got confused. Also because hydrogen resembles both with alkali metals as well as with halogens.

• He placed some elements having less atomic masses before the elements having higher masses.

• He was not able to explain the cause of periodicity among the elements.
