The greatest contribution of Buddhism was the establishment of a simple religion which could be easily understood and followed by the common people. In this religion, rites, rituals, yajnas and caste had no place. According to K. M. Panikar, “To the common man this (Buddhism) was indeed a new gospel.

Buddhism laid emphasis on non-violence and the sanctity of animal life. ... The Hindus were originally meat eaters but due to the influence of Buddhism became vegetarian. Thus Buddhism exercised a tremendous influence on India culture. It enriched religion, art, sculpture, language and literature of India.

Like Jainism, Buddhism went a long way in influencing the Indian culture. The life and teachings of Buddha cast spell over the Indian mass.
