What is the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi towards the growth of democracy?

Because of him only today we are free and independent. He had played a very important contribution towards democracy as he was educated and lived in South Arica he knew the meanings of all the western ideas.Thus he united the people of India amd fought for the country in a nonviolence way.
