In ammonia , Nitrogen is sp³ hybridised as it has one lone pair and 3 sigma bonds. Due to formation of only 3 bonds its covalency is 3

Ammonia  =  NH_{3}

1 nitrogen atom is with 3 hydrogen atoms

∵ 1 hydrogen atom requires 1 electron to fill its outermost shell

∴ 3 hydrogen atoms will requires 3 electrons to fill its outermost shells

Here nitrogen is providing 3 electrons to these 3 hydrogen atoms .

So here co-valency of nitrogen = 3
