It is described through the perspective of Mr Gupta, an Indian government employee experiencing training in London. Mr Gupta and Maggie had the conversation when Maggie brought flowers from him for her Brother Frank's grave. At first, Gupta never wanted the money and hence he refused the shilling from Maggie. He found that Shilling from her is worthless before her emotions for her brother. Hence, he kept the Shilling offered by Maggie as a priceless amount.
