Sensor is a physical device that give a response when felt by an input from surroundings.

It as by it's name sense the changes and abnormalities from environmental and gives the signal.

It may detect change in temperature, moisture , light, humidity etc...

Types of sensors are Position sensor , Hall sensor etc..
