Living cells are divided into two types based on their structure and the means by which they obtain energy -- prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Prokaryotic organisms arose about 3.5 billion years ago and include bacteria and other very simple organisms. Eukaryotes did not appear until about two million years after prokaryotes did and include animals, plants and fungi, among other things. These two cell types demonstrate various differences within their nuclei.
