Following are the criteria for the selection of crops for mixed cropping:
- Duration of crop: the duration of the two different crop should be different.for example: one crop should be long duration crop and other should be short duration crop.
- Growth habit: the crop should have different canopy for example-different structure of leaves, flower ,color of flower, height of plant.
- Nutrient demand : as the amount of nutrient in an atmosphere is fixed ,so to decrease the loss and to do mixed cropping ,different crops should have different nutrient demand .for example: one crops should demand less nitrogen for growth and the other crops demand more nitrogen for the growth.
- Root pattern: the root of the two different crops should be different .for example: one crop should have shallow root pattern while other crop should have deep root pattern.
- Water Requirement: One crop should require more water then the other crop.

Growth Habit: One of the crops should be growing tall and the other should be growing short. The component crops should have different canopy (i.e., the structure of leaves, stem and flowers found above the ground). Nutrient Demand: One of the component crops should require lesser nutrients than the other crop.
