This new rupee symbol is made by combining the letter 'र' in Devanagari script and the letter 'R' in Roman script, which also has a horizontal line. This line reflects our national flag and equal sign. The Government of India accepted this mark on 15 July 2010. This mark has been created by Mr. D. Udaya Kumar, Post Graduate Design of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai.
Before the introduction of the new symbol, '₹', the term ‘rs’ in English and ‘रु’ in HIndi was used to indicate rupee.
The modern Indian rupee is divided into 100 paise. The coins are valued at 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 paise and are also 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees.
Banknotes are priced at 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 2000.
