 \bf Pitch

Pitch is the characteristics of sound by which we can distinguish between different sounds of the same loudness. Pitch depends upon the frequency of vibrations. Different sounds of different pitches have different frequencies. The shrillness of the sound is called its pitch. The higher the frequency, the higher is the pitch. The voice of a female is high-pitched than a man's voice. For example, when a train is approaching us, the pitch is higher, and as the train is leaving, the pitch starts decreasing. The pitch of sound depends on two factors:

  • Frequency of the vibrating body.

  • Relative motion between the source of the sound and the receiver of the sound.

Musical sounds of a specific pitch are called notes. A set of tuning forks with different frequencies marked on them can be used to produce sounds of known frequency. A tuning fork has two steel prongs which vibrate when struck. The prongs move in and out together generating sounds of different pitches.
