Degrees of freedom (statistics)

In statistics, the number of degrees of freedom is the number of values in the final calculation of a statistic that are free to vary.[1]

Degree of freedom for a dynamic system is the number of directions it changes to move freely. Or it can also be defined as the number of coordinates it required to describe the configuration and position of a system completely.

The degree of freedom is represented as N.

The formula, N = 3A - R

Where A is the number of particles in the system and R is the number of independent relations.

Degree of freedom of some gases are :

  • For monotomic gas (N) =3
  • For diatomic gas(N) =5
  • For non-linear triatomic gas (N) =6
  • For linear triatomic gas (N) =7
