What is the definition of potential energy?

please anyone explain it it in well defined manner because I am very confused​

for ex:

            When is stored in dam , due to the height of the water column and since it is stationary it possess potential energy..

Potential Energy(P.E.)=mgh    , where

                                                        m=mass of the body .

                                                         g=acceleration due to gravity

                                                         h=height above the ground level
