Since the zero polynomial is a constant polynomial, it might initially seem to make sense to say that it has degree zero, as is the case for other nonzero constant polynomials. However, one of the nicest facts about the degree of a polynomial (at least one with coefficients from an integral domain or field, such as Z,Q,R or C ) is that it behaves well with respect to multiplication.
However, if we set the degree of the zero polynomial equal to zero, equation will not hold true. For example setting f(x)=0 and g(x)=x , the equation would yield 0=0+1 , which clearly won’t do. For this reason, the degree of the zero polynomial is commonly set to be −∞ .
