Geographically, Kerala is a 'thin' state, with mountain ranges on one side and the sea on the other. And then in between you have lots of hills and valleys.

Most people tend to live in the low lying areas. On top of this, the settlements concentrate around National Highways.

There are other cultural factors. The higher standard of living in Kerala and it's small area, almost makes it as good as one large city.

People don't like to concentrate in the cities. Hence the path from one city to another is lined with small towns, almost indistinguishable in look from any Kerala city, except for size.

And even in between these small towns, a number of village centers with as much facilities.

Structurally, Kerala is like no other State in India.
