There are two common forms of copper oxide,
1.cupric oxide( copper 2 oxide)
It's chemical formula is CuO. Here Cu has a valency of +2. It is a black solid
2. cuprous oxide( copper 1 oxide)
It's chemical formula is Cu2O. Cu has a valency of +1 here. It is reddish brown in colour, existing as a solid. Comparing to CuO, Cu2O is more unstable.

The main difference between cuprous and cupric is that cuprous is copper +1 cation whereas cupric is copper +2 cation. When copper is reacted with oxygen, two stable compounds Cu2O and CuO form. Copper Oxide is the inorganic compound with the formula CuO (Figure 1) also known as 'cupric oxide'.
