ȯ Why are circular coils preferred in transformers?

Coils with a circular former have a number of advantages over those of rectangular form.

Firstly they have minimum mean length of turn. It can be proved that a circle has minimum ratio between perimeter distance (circumference) and area enclosed. So for a circular coil the winding resistance and therefore winding heat loss is minimised.

Secondly they are better braced against electromagnetic forces. This is most important under fault conditions.

Thirdly they are easier to wind. For a rectangular winding form the bending of the winding wire on the corners is very tight and quite difficult to do without damaging the insulation. So a circular form is much easier.

❤Circular coils are preferred because of their high mechanical strength. Their high mechanical strength allows them to be used in high voltage distribution and power transformer..❤
